Our Albuquerque, NM, Providers Can Correct Frown Lines, Yet Preserve Natural Expression

Prescription Dysport® at Albuquerque’s Spa @ WDC is an injectable treatment used to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.

What is Dysport®?

Like BOTOX®, Dysport® is an injectable neuromodulator treatment, though this brand is made by a company known as Galderma. It is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe glabellar lines, which are the vertical lines that form between the eyebrows when we frown. These lines are sometimes referred to as the “angry 11s” or “devil horns.” Glabellar lines are “dynamic” wrinkles formed due to muscle contractions that make skin bunch up.

Neuromodulators such as the botulinum toxin protein (the active ingredient used in Dysport®) work by blocking the signals from our body’s neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (ACh), which tell muscles to contract. When the muscles do not respond to these signals, they do not contract, and the skin on top of them stays smooth and unwrinkled.

Besides treating dynamic wrinkles, Dysport® may be used for other aesthetic and therapeutic improvements, such as for chin dimpling or excessive sweating. Our board-certified dermatologists and registered nurses can advise you on which treatments may best benefit you.

Dysport® vs. Botox®: What's the Difference?

While both of these products are botulinum toxin-based injectables used for the prevention of wrinkles, there are some important differences between them. Dysport® is a more diluted product and spreads to a larger area because it has smaller molecules. This means that the proper dosage for Dysport® will be different from that of BOTOX®.

Additionally, Dysport® is believed to work more quickly than other similar neuromodulators. Unlike Botox®, which is FDA-approved for three areas on the upper third of the face (crow’s feet, forehead lines, and glabellar lines), Dysport® has received approval for moderate to severe glabellar lines between the brows.

The choice of either one of these products or a combination of the two neuromodulators may be based on your preference or your injector’s assessment of your skin and cosmetic goals.

How to Prepare for Dysport®

There isn’t much preparation needed for a Dysport® session. However, patients may have to stop taking specific medications or supplements, as well as have their full medical history assessed prior to any injections. Some of the medications you may be asked to avoid include allergy medications, blood thinners, cold medications, muscle relaxers, and sleep aids.

People who have had allergic reactions to botulinum toxin products or a lactose allergy may not be good candidates for this treatment.

What is a Dysport® Treatment Session Like?

Depending on the extent and number of aesthetic concerns being addressed, a Dysport® treatment session can be completed in as little as 10 minutes. Many of our patients visit us for their treatments during their lunch break. Injections aren’t typically painful, but we may apply a topical anaesthetic to reduce any discomfort. No recovery time is needed afterward, though you will probably need to avoid exercise for a few hours.

Once Dysport® is administered, it may take up to two weeks for results to begin to develop. For first-time patients, we occasionally ask them to come in for a quick touch-up appointment about two weeks after the first session in order to refine results.

Side effects are generally limited to injection-related swelling, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild to moderate and fade away within a few days after treatment.

Results can last between three to six months, depending on how quickly your body naturally processes the neuromodulator. Our patients often choose to repeat the treatments every few months to maintain their results. Repeat treatments are safe and effective.

Clinically Proven Results with One Dysport® Treatment

In three clinical studies of people whose frown lines were rated “moderate” or “severe” by a doctor before their treatment with Dysport®, 30 days after treatment, the majority (88 percent, 85 percent, and 86 percent in each of the three studies) had their frown lines rated by a doctor as “mild” or “moderate” at a maximum frown. For example, a patient could improve from “severe” to “moderate” or from “moderate” to “mild.”
