How Does Latisse® Work?

It’s normal for some eyelashes to fall out and grow in again at a regular rate during their natural life cycle. Just like the hair on our scalp and our eyebrows, our eyelashes also naturally get thinner over time because of the aging process.

Everyone loses a few eyelashes each day, but if you’re losing more lashes than average, it could be due to other causes—such as skin irritation from eye makeup, lash extensions or eyelash curlers, hereditary factors, allergies, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) that causes itching and burning, a thyroid disorder, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or an auto-immune disease called alopecia.

Even if there isn’t a medical reason for your sparse lashes and you simply want to boost growth, it’s safe to use Latisse® to enhance their appearance. The mechanism behind how the medication produces fuller, more elongated lashes is still being researched, but it is known to increase hair follicle production during the active growth phase while also increasing the length of the growth phase.

Latisse® is a reformulated version of an FDA-approved eyedrop medication commonly used for glaucoma called bimatoprost, so it contains the same main ingredients.

Latisse® Treatment Details

For optimal results, Latisse® drops must be regularly applied on the lash line of the upper eyelid each night with a special applicator for at least two months. The routine application gradually promotes the growth of longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes. Apply it carefully to avoid getting the eyelash serum on other skin areas.

Follow the patient information leaflet to make sure you know how to apply the medication properly, and contact our team if you have any questions.

Always wash your face, remove all makeup, and take out contact lenses before using the serum, and never re-use single use applicators or allow the bottle to become contaminated.

Latisse® is not designed for use on the lower lash line, and it should not be used on the eye itself.

Significant improvement tends to take about eight weeks to become noticeable, while the ideal impact will come after 16 weeks. If you quit using the product, your lashes will return to their previous appearance.

There is a possibility of some side effects, including slight eye itching or redness.

Who is a Candidate for Latisse®

Patients who have low growth of eyelashes will be good candidates. Latisse® is meant only for adults over the age of 18 and is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients are required to have a medical prescription to use this medication. During your consultation, tell us about any existing eye conditions you have and other eye medications you may be taking.
