What is Juvederm® filler made of? Our Albuquerque, NM-based team at The Spa @ Western Dermatology Consultants occasionally hears this question from patients trying facial fillers for the first time to reduce wrinkles or enhance facial features.
As signs of aging become more apparent when collagen production decreases with the passage of time, many people seek safe and effective solutions to restore their youthful and vibrant appearance. Juvederm® is one of the most popular fillers for facial rejuvenation. But what exactly is Juvederm made of? In this post, we’ll explore the components of this wrinkle-reducing treatment.
Juvederm® facial fillers are soft gels with a smooth consistency. All of the fillers in the collection contain are made from a base of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring substance found in the human body. As a polysaccharide, HA is a type of sugar molecule that plays a vital role in maintaining skin hydration and elasticity.
Hyaluronic acid is abundant in connective tissues, including the skin, joints, and eyes. It also acts as a lubricant by reducing friction between moving body parts, and provides structural support to the skin, where it is responsible for maintaining plumpness and firmness.
HA fillers work by adding volume at the injection point to add fullness to certain areas like the cheeks or to have a smoothing effect on wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds. However, each product in the line of Juvederm® fillers has a different formulation and concentration of hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, meaning it has the ability to attract and retain water, keeping the skin moisturized and supple. For this reason, many topical skin products—such as moisturizers and serums—also contain HA.
In addition to HA, Juvederm® contains a small amount of an anesthetic called lidocaine to ensure that injections are as comfortable as possible. To help maintain the effects of Juvederm®, you can apply skin products containing hyaluronic acid on the skin after having a treatment.
