A chemical peel makes use of a solution that removes the outermost layer of skin. This is the layer where fine wrinkles, blemishes, spots, and other aesthetic problems develop. Peeling away that layer reveals a younger and healthier-looking layer of newer, fresher skin with fewer cosmetic issues to distract from a clearer complexion and more uniform smoothness.
Whether you choose to receive this service at our Spa or at another location, it is best to ensure that you have a trained and experienced professional apply a chemical peel, so that you can maximize your chances of optimal results in a safe and welcoming environment.
How Can a Chemical Peel Improve the Health & Appearance of Skin?
Chemical peel treatments are a very safe, effective, and efficient way to maintain the health of skin, as they are customizable to almost any skin type and range of concerns.
Some of the many improvements that can be achieved with chemical peels include:
- More even skin texture and tone
- Reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Fewer breakouts of acne, along with improvement in the appearance of acne and acne scars
- Faded dark spots, as well as reduced hyperpigmentation, freckles, and other pigment abnormalities
Most of our clients at the spa receive chemical peel treatment sessions every two to six weeks until they achieve their desired results. After this, maintenance sessions can be performed as needed, depending on your unique skin profile and how you respond to treatment.
There is also little to no downtime associated with chemical peels, making the quick treatment sessions relatively easy to work into a hectic lifestyle. Aftercare instructions will be provided by our aestheticians.
What to Expect from a Chemical Peel Treatment Session
Because of concerns that this type of treatment may leave individuals with painful, bright red faces, we understand that many people can be intimidated or wary about foraying into the world of chemical peels. But the reality is that for the large majority of clients, all they are left with is a healthy-looking and refreshed complexion. Newer, more advanced formulations of chemical peels are also formulated to address specific skin care concerns, while being safer, more comfortable, and minimally irritating when used on those with sensitive skin.
If your skin peels or flakes after treatment, it means that your skin is shedding dead or damaged cells from its surface to reveal the newer, healthier cells underneath. This is simply an accelerated form of the natural cell turnover process of your skin, and supporting this process with chemical peel treatments is what leads to skin that looks, feels, and functions better. Think of peeling as a temporary side effect, similar to the drowsiness from taking Benadryl – while it may make you temporarily drowsy, it will still achieve its purpose of controlling a histamine response.
However, it is important to note that not everyone who receives a chemical peel treatment will experience peeling of surface skin in the same way, as this varies depending on your skin type, resilience of skin, type of peel used, and the number of layers applied. As well, those receiving regular chemical peels may experience reduced post-treatment peeling over time, due to their subsequent surface layers becoming healthier with upkeep.
Some of our clients experience “sheeting”, where large patches of their surface skin peel off at once. Others may experience smaller pieces flaking off, similar to what happens during dry winters or after a mild sunburn. Peeling can also occur at a cellular level that is not immediately visible to the naked eye. The general rule of thumb to note is that the more deeply penetrating the chemical peel, the more extensive the peeling is.
Types of Chemical Peels
Our Pigment Balancing Masque is a unique, customizable peel that can correct hyperpigmentation and even out the appearance of blotchy, photo-damaged skin. Typically, the best results can be seen after four to six treatments. The masque contains anti-inflammatory and brightening ingredients combined with an exfoliating solution that stimulates cell turnover to gently reduce hyperpigmented surface layers of skin. This peel can be further individualized with a separate booster.
VI Peels are powerful chemical exfoliants that can dramatically reduce the effects of sun damage, environmental factors, and signs of aging to enhance the natural luminosity of underlying skin. It also calms inflammation and kills acne-causing bacteria, the main causes of acne breakouts. VI Peels are particularly well-suited to individuals who suffer from skin conditions such as melasma, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.
As they are formulated with a numbing agent, treatment is virtually pain-free. Each session takes less than 20 minutes on average, with final results becoming visible roughly a week after treatment.
Especially beneficial for sun-damaged and sensitive skin, SkinCeuticals Professional Gel Peels work to gradually improve the texture and tone of your skin with minimal irritation or disruption to your regular lifestyle.
