Wrinkles, Crow's Feet, and More

What are Wrinkles, Crow's Feet, Laugh Lines, and Sagging Skin?

Facial wrinkles are lines or creases that develop on the skin as a result of aging, repeated facial expressions, sun damage, or other factors.

t’s one of the most common problems, especially as we age: fine lines and wrinkles. They appear all over our bodies, but most prominently on our faces. Just because wrinkles appear, however, doesn’t mean they have to stay.

There are a variety of options available to treat wrinkles, from Botox® and Dysport® to a range of dermal fillers. Laser treatments can be effective, as can microdermabrasion or chemical peels. It all depends on the individual: the severity of the wrinkles, where they are found, and personal preference when it comes to treatment.

What Causes Wrinkles?

There are many factors that contribute to the formation of wrinkles.

As a person ages, the epidermal cells become thinner and less “sticky.” The thinner cells make the skin look noticeably thinner. The decreased stickiness of the cells weakens the skin’s protective barrier, allowing moisture to be released instead of being kept in the skin. This causes dryness.

The number of epidermal cells decreases by 10 percent per decade, and they divide more slowly as we age, making the skin less able to repair itself quickly.

As we get older, not only does the dermal layer thin, but also less collagen is produced, and the elastin fibers that provide elasticity wear out. These changes cause the skin to form wrinkles and sag. Also, sebaceous glands get bigger but produce less sebum, and the number of sweat glands decreases. Both of these changes lead to skin dryness.

Our skin becomes more fragile and easier to tear. In the subcutaneous layer, the fat cells get smaller with age. This leads to more noticeable wrinkles and sagging, as the fat cells cannot “fill in” the damage from the other layers.

Crow's Feet in Albuquerque

Crow’s feet are small wrinkles that appear starting at the outer corner of the eye. These wrinkles begin small, but slowly expand and deepen over time, especially without adequate preventive maintenance.

The skin under your eyes is VERY delicate and requires special care.

One of the primary causes of crow’s feet is exposure to sunlight. We all know that skin ages when exposed to the sun, and additionally the sun causes us to squint, which can make wrinkles in the skin around our eyes and on other parts of our face.

Laugh Lines in Albuquerque

“Hey baby — nice nasolabial folds!” That’s doctor-speak for laugh lines, and these wrinkles aren’t funny!

These lines are the two skin folds that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth, separating the cheeks from the upper lips.

As we age, these lines become more pronounced, and for many women can be cosmetically undesirable.

Sagging Skin in Albuquerque

“Loose jowls.” “Turkey-neck.” “Falling face.” These unflattering terms are commonly used to describe the same symptom: age-related sagging skin. Loose skin can also find its cause in significant body weight loss.

As we age, we end up losing volume in our face. This volume comes mostly from fat. Combine that with the unwanted effects of gravity, and soon we’re looking at droops, wrinkles, and bands. Not fun!

Your skin has two distinct layers, called the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is on the surface and contains the pigment, epidermal cells, and proteins. The dermis is the layer located underneath the epidermis and contains the dermal cells, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and oil glands—plus it is responsible for providing the nutrients for the epidermal layer. It also contains the connective tissue, as well as our skin’s collagen.

Although it is located beneath the epidermal layer, it is changes in the dermal layer that cause the outer skin to form wrinkles and lose elasticity as we age. As we grow older, the amount of fat found in our lower layer of skin decreases, our glands produce less oil, and collagen and elastin fibers lose their elasticity. The natural process of cell reproduction in the dermal layer also decreases as we grow older, resulting in a slower rejuvenation of our skin cells.

In many cases, a combination of surgical and non-surgical treatments may be suggested by your dermatologist in order to achieve the best skin-tightening results to remove wrinkles, droops, and bands.
